On March 29, 2023, the Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was arrested by Russia while on assignment, accused of Espionage. Evan’s true crime? Journalism. After 1 year of his wrongful detainment, to stand up for Evan, the Wall Street Journal published his Missing Articles. A historic edition in 134 years of The Journal made in partnership with its newsroom, where blank spaces on the cover and across the paper represented Evan’s missing journalism.
With immense pressure on all fronts, Evan was finally freed in August 2024. In celebration, Japanese artist Sho Shibuya, who usually works exclusively with the New York Times, made an exception with this cover.
